The Village of Beer: East Devon

The Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary was founded in Salcombe Regis, Near Sidmouth in 1969 by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, MBE. She dedicated her life to rescuing donkeys throughout the world and through her work and devotion the Sanctuary grew to become an international charity.

Renowned the world over, the charity’s aim is to have a world where donkeys and mules live free from suffering, and their contribution to humanity is fully valued. They also care for the largest collective group of mules (a donkey-horse hybrid) in England.
