Barnard, Howard howard.barnard@talktalk.net
I first had a holiday at Beer I think it would have been the late 60's as a child. We found it by mistake. We were on a touring holiday of Devon with our caravan( 12ft Knowsley van with a grey Austin Cambridge). We left the caravan in that little dirt layby on the beer road at Hangmans Stone (you could do that then ) and drove into Beer to investigate the caravan site. I can remember my Dad saying " this is alright " And we have been going there every year since and I am now 45 years old. In those days there used to be a small Bedford minibus with a sliding driver's door that was a kind of private bus service between the camp via the hill ( then two way traffic ) to the village for a small cost, but it wasn't there long ( poor gearbox ).Mum and dad  now have a static caravan there close to the site office and are there for most of the season and still love it. Some of the fishermen in the village I remember as children and used to play with them sometimes on the beach while on holiday ( they don't remember me now). Fond memories !
I and other people believe it would a great idea to have a view cam in Beer that could be accessed via the internet so live pictures could viewed from anywhere in the UK . Exmouth have one and its great

Barton, Joanne joanne-barton@hotmail.co.uk
I first came to Beer in 1950 from Princes Risborough, Bucks, to the caravans and my family enjoyed several years of happy holidays there. We always had a beach hut and went mackerel fishing with Mr Chapple, a swim in the sea and then had the steep trek up the hill. I was seven years old and I never forgot Beer.
I always wanted to return and this July I did, and it was just as wonderful as I remembered it. I met some lovely Beer people at the British Legion coffee morning and enjoyed the tea at Chapples and just sitting on the beach.
By the way, well done to the Beer boys for their Atlantic row.
Thank you for staying beautiful, Beer. I will be back soon.

Have always wanted to visit, with the obvious name connection .  Some people say my dad has a Devon accent, although he was born on Romney Marsh, Kent.  I wonder if we do have a connection with the village somewhere in the past? Carter, Robert Henry Woodgate robtwcarter@tesco.net My ancestors lived in Beer.  Robert Woodgate was twice jailed at Dorchester for smuggling.  Later (in 1841) became a coastguard and lived on the cliff cottage out of Beer. How did the Woodgates come to Beer? Jan 2006
Corbett, Robert rob.corbett@scot-bev.com I used to holiday in Beer regularly from the (very) late Fifties and early Sixties. I had.have many cousins etc who lived there, Jean and Penny Brawn and my cousin Cas(?) Adkin who had circa ten children befor his untimely death and they all used to live in a large house at the top of the village called Little Hill. My memories of Beer in that era are manyfold and very fond, including the time I nearly drowned on the beach as an eight year old. July 2007

Cusack, Andy cusackandy@eircom.netMy wife, Ursula, and I spent most of our honeymoon in Beer, in April, 1969. Although livinig in Ireland then (and now), we got married in Colchester on 25th April, 1969, and the following days set off westward in a hired car, without any prior accommodation arrangements. We fell into Beer quite by accident, and booked into one of the local hotels in the centre of the village. We were made extremely welcome, and quickly fell in with the locals in the pub nearby. We were so well accepted that within a few days we joined the local darts team on a bus trip for an away match in a neighbouring village. Because it was a friendly match, and taking into consideration our marital status, I was co-opted on to the Beer Darts team for the night. Our time in Beer on honeymoon is part of our family history, but we have never been back. Our son had lived in Chichester for the past eight years and we visit him and his family every summer. This year, 39 years later we hope to re-visit Beer in late June, and we are looking into what accomodation might be available for a couple of nights.March 2008

Remember super days in Beer with crab sandwiches on the beach with pots of tea from Chapple's. Dougie Orley with the red shirt and rides on E127 catching mackerel back in the seventies. Visited recently and skipper of E127 is still the same. Went out with my own children and felt quite nostalgic! A super place with super people.

I shall never know another fishing village as lovely as Beer
Filed with special times the cries of gulls and friends to hold dear

George, Michaelbackflashmg@hotmail.comI worked at the Anchor and then for Claud Hayman 1966/67 then I moved away for many years. But I never forgot the place and since 2002 my wife and I have visited 5 times staying B&B or self catering. I never tire of watching the fishermen bring their catch ashore to the fish shop.We went up the Exeter canal and visited Branscombe, Sidmouth, Ottery St. Mary, went into Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's River Cottage HQ in Axminster. Never short of things to do. I got talking to a Westlake and a Newton in the Barrel of Beer. I wish I could spend a fortnight there every 3 months. Met up with friends I first knew 40 years ago. The crab sandwiches in the tea rooms are out of this world and the meal portions at the Dolphin are massive - and good.September 2008

Harrowell, John ciderwithrosie@btinternet.com I first visited Beer, by accident, some 25 + years ago and have since returned many times for holidays.  Pure Heaven and relaxation on Earth... All my children endured many walks up & down its lovely roads & lunches on the beach.  No holiday to Beer was complete until we all searched the rockpools and we have collected 100's of fossils over the years from Lyme Regis & all the other beauty spots that the Devon & Dorset Coast offers in abundance.  We usually stayed at the caravan site perched up on Beer Cliffs as if dropped there by God in the very lap of Beautiful Beer.  We used to book our caravan with Joy Shell who always made us feel welcome.  She was forever smiling and her smile and the beauty of Beer will never leave me.  I shall return one day soon I hope to flavour again the village with all its history & hospitality February 2005
Holloway, Martinmartinthebrewhouse@tiscali.co.ukBeer is a wonderful place. In the early sixties - still teenagers - just, my pal and I frequently used to abscond from our jobs of work and travel from Wiltshire down to Beer for a long weekend. (Our employers must have been extremely tolerant). A little later I travelled down occassionally with my rock band to play at the Mariners Hall - what great dances they were! Now, very many years later, my wife and I have settled in Honiton, which gives us so many opportunities to visit and enjoy not only Beer of course, but the whole wonderful area.
Thank you for a website that shares so much with the cyber visitor.

Mowat, Jo jomowat@hotmail.com
My Grandad had a caravan at the site for nearly 20 years and we spent lots of fantastic holidays in Beer.  It was the very first caravan on the right hand side at the last entrance at the top of the hill, fantastic views, I always used to think that it looked liked fairy land at night with all the lights on. Very sad when he died and the caravan had got into a state of bad repair and had to be removed.  I visited briefly and found it very moving.  Pasties on the beach, walking to Branscombe to get a Cream Tea, fishing in rock pools, going to Pecorama! and many more memories.  One thing I didn't like were the narrow country lanes!

I must come back and see how Beer is today.
